Keyword Research FAQ

A good keyword has high search volume (people are searching for it), manageable competition (you can rank for it), and relevance to your content. Long-tail keywords (3-5 words) are often better for new channels because they're more specific and have less competition.

Competition level is based on the number of videos targeting that keyword, the average views of top-ranking videos, and the authority of channels ranking for it. Low competition means fewer videos and smaller channels dominate—a great opportunity for you.

For new or small channels, prioritize low-competition keywords even if they have lower search volume. Ranking #1 for a 1,000-search keyword brings more views than ranking #50 for a 100,000-search keyword. As your channel grows, you can target more competitive keywords.

Focus on 1 primary keyword for your title and first tag, then use 10-15 related keywords as additional tags. Include your main keyword naturally in your description 2-3 times. Don't stuff keywords—YouTube values relevance over quantity.
